How To Calculate A Tip And Split The Bill
3 min read
When a group splits a bill, agree on the tip base, percentage and split before anyone pays. The free Tip Calculator puts the bill, tip and per-person amount together so you can check the payment.
Enter the bill amount, choose a tip percentage and set the number of people. The result shows each person's payment, the tip total and the bill plus tip. Rounding starts switched on and rounds the total up to a whole dollar.
Start With The Agreed Bill Amount
Read the receipt before entering a number. Check whether it already includes a service charge or gratuity, and agree on which amount you are using as the tip base.
The percentage is your choice. The calculator offers presets including 15%, 18%, 20% and 25%; choose the value that matches your intended payment rather than treating a preset as advice about local practice.
For a hypothetical bill of $80, an 18% tip adds $14.40. With rounding off, the bill plus tip is $94.40. An equal split between two people is $47.20 each.
Check What Rounding Changes
Rounding changes the combined payment. Rounding $94.40 up to $95 adds another 60 cents, making the two-person split $47.50 each. The amount above the original $80 bill is now $15, or 18.75%, rather than exactly 18%. The effective-tip line displays that as 18.8%.
Read the combined total alongside the tip label. The tool's nominal tip can differ from the amount above the bill once rounding is applied. In the two-person result, the effective-tip line helps show that difference.
If the group wants the selected percentage without an added rounding amount, switch rounding off. If you keep it on, agree on the rounded total before settling the bill.
Check The Split Before Paying
An equal split works when the group has agreed to share the total equally. If orders need separate totals, calculate those separately rather than using one party size for an unequal bill.
Check the displayed shares against the combined total. Where a split produces fractions of a cent, agree who covers any remainder. If one person pays the merchant and the others reimburse them, use the same agreed total for those reimbursements.
Calculate Your Bill
Open the Tip Calculator, enter the agreed bill base, choose the percentage and set the party size. Check the rounding control, then read both the per-person amount and the combined total before paying.
