Your onboarding is a promise

Onboarding is not a tutorial. It is the first promise your product makes, and users judge every later moment against it. If the first five minutes are fast and honest, people forgive rough edges for months. If the first five minutes are a maze of modals and permission requests, people assume the whole product is like that. They are usually right.

The three promises worth making

Notice what is not on the list: delight, surprise, personality. Those are seasoning. The meal is trust, and trust comes from the product behaving the way the first five minutes implied it would.

The audit

Open your product in a private window and time yourself. How many seconds until a stranger gets one real result? How many screens ask for something before that result exists? Every screen in between is a leak in the bucket.

Then check the promises. Can the user undo the last action? Can they leave with their work? Can they do the core thing without telling you who they are? Each honest yes buys you more patience than any welcome animation ever will.
