AI Agents & Skills for Business
Tools and Connections

Lesson 14 of 35 - 6 min

MCP in Plain Language

MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It's an open standard for connecting an AI agent to outside tools and data. Think of it as a common plug. Without it, every tool needed its own custom connection to every agent. With it, a tool offers its abilities once and any compatible agent can use them.

An MCP server exposes a set of actions, such as 'search my calendar' or 'create a task'. The agent sees the list, chooses which to call, and receives the result. Servers can be run on your computer or by a service.

What This Means for You

  • You can give an agent access to the specific tools a job needs, and no more.
  • You choose what each connection is allowed to do, such as read only.
  • Connections can be added and removed without rebuilding your skills.

A Named Example

Imagine a CRM connector. It offers some read tools, such as 'list contacts' and 'get deal', and some write tools, such as 'update deal' and 'delete contact'. A skill might say how to prepare a call briefing. The connector is how the agent actually reads the deal. This is an illustration, so check the real tool list of any connector you install.

Read Tools and Write Tools

  • Read tool: looks at something and changes nothing. Start here.
  • Write tool: creates, edits, sends or deletes. Allow each one on purpose, one at a time.
  • Ask-first: a setting some products offer where the agent must get your approval for a tool call.

Context Bloat

Every connected tool adds its description to the agent's working context. Ten connectors with forty tools each can crowd out your own instructions and make the agent slower and less accurate. Connect only what this job needs, and turn the rest off.

A Click Path Pattern (Check Your Product, As of October 2026)

  • Open your product's settings and find connectors, integrations or tools.
  • Open the connector and find its list of tools.
  • Set write tools to blocked or ask-first, and keep read tools on.
  • Run a test that tries a write and confirm it is blocked.
  • Menu names change between products and releases, so use the product's current help page if a name differs.

Exercise

  • Pick one connector you might use and list its read tools and write tools from its documentation.
  • Decide which you'll allow for your first project.
  • Pass condition: a written allow list with at least one write tool marked blocked and a note on how you'll test the block.
