How To Improve Your Copywriting With Six Weekly Drills
3 min read

Good copy comes from habits, and habits come from practice. Reading about clear writing helps less than rewriting your own pages again and again.
This post sets out a six-week routine. If you want guided drills, The Copywriting Skills Course follows the same idea.
Week One: Cut Ten Percent
Take a page you wrote and cut ten percent of the words. Keep a list of the words you cut most. Many people find the same fillers recur, and that list becomes a personal habit to watch.
Week Two: Say It Simply
Replace long words with short ones and abstract claims with specifics. Rewrite ten sentences. A fictional example: "We offer innovative solutions" becomes "We build booking pages for dog groomers".
Week Three: Headlines
Write ten headlines for one offer using four different patterns, such as a direct promise, a question, a number and a plain statement. Pick the one you would click.
Week Four: Openers
Rewrite the first two lines of three old pieces. Openers decide whether people read on, so they repay practice.
Week Five: Proof
Turn vague claims into examples with names, numbers and places that can be checked. Use only real ones. If you cannot support a claim, cut it.
Week Six: Review Your Own Work
Build a checklist from the habits you found in the earlier weeks. Use it before you publish anything.
Keep The Output
Save each exercise. Compare week one with week six, and keep your checklist where you write.
If You Want Guided Drills
You can run this routine on your own writing as it stands. If you'd like the exercises set out for you, The Copywriting Skills Course works through the six drills in order, with the same outputs - a trimmed page, ten rewritten sentences, a headline sheet, three new openers, five proof lines and a personal edit checklist - and the first lesson is free.
